The Creek War and the War of 1812
Blackshear's Ocmulgee River Line
Back to Georgia Militia Sites List
In August of 1813 Governor David Mitchell dispatched General David Blackshear to the Ocmulgee River, in modern-day south central Georgia, in response to urgent cries from residents in the exposed frontier counties
of Twiggs, Pulaski, and Telfair. To protect the region from Red Stick attack, Blackshear ordered a string of small fortifications constructed. Each was manned by a small garrison and connected by reconnoitering
cavalrymen who watched for an attack that never came.
The exact locations of only a few of the forts are known. A few scattered historic markers about the region's history mention them. Photos of these markers and details about their locations are coming soon.
